Devils Scrap By for the Win Defeating York

MATCH REPORT: Devils Scrap By for the Win

The Devils traveled to Elmhurst for their first conference game of the season, taking on York’s Varsity Dukes. With past failures in mind, Central was determined to hit the ground running from the offset. A difficult game unfolded in front of the Devils. Talking after the game, coach Michael Wiggins said “The game was exactly what we expected and York came out giving a strong effort,” Wiggins said, “we know that every team in our conference is strong and this team was no different. I think our guys remembered last year’s result and wanted to be sure that didn’t happen again.”

The eventual breakthrough came from Gareth Maritz who squeezed his penalty into the back of the net and gave the Devils something to defend. “We are happy to get the win, a conference win, and even further, we grew as a team and our players developed this evening. Every game presents a learning opportunity and this game gave us plenty of talking points.”

Overall, the team took pride in their third clean sheet on the bounce as Wiggins commented, ”Our overall team defending was once again strong, and Nathan [Goliak] made another game-changing save. The way we are defending collectively has us playing at a good level.”

Central challenged Glenbard West [3-2 W] away from home and then face the almighty rival, derby day game against Lyons Township High School, a must-watch, mouthwatering game. It’s in these kinds of games that past records don’t matter, current form goes away, and home advantage can make all the difference. These games are almost always split by only one goal. Definitely, do not miss it. [6:30 Dickinson Stadium - Sep. 20, 2018]
