Devils Defeat Defensively-Strong LT to Qualify for Sectional Final
by Zamaan Qureshi
Western Springs, Il. (October 29, 2019) - What an incredible game! A hard-fought, physical battle between two top-quality opponents. Credit to LT for fighting until the very end.
Our boys turned out on what as an increasingly cold night to hammer home three goals and qualify for the sectional finals. These two sides had met before, this season, with LT edging the Devils out in a 1-0 fight-till-the-end kind of game to clinch the Silver Brick. But it was that motivation that drove Hinsdale Central to put three past LT’s strong defensive unit. The first twenty minutes produced two sides that canceled each other out, for the most part. Early chances eventually came for LT, twice in quick succession with LT coming close off the break in the twenty-second minute with Jack Latrell putting a chance narrowly wide, and then clipping the crossbar.
But the breakthrough eventually came, five minutes later, courtesy of a quick touch, pivot, and adept finish by Christian Gambla who has banged in goals for the Devils this season - including a stylish first-half hat trick against Proviso West earlier in the season. The Devils saw out the half, going into the break with goalkeeper Nathan Goliak relatively untroubled. Coach Michael Wiggins desired “more of the same” that “got us into this position,” and emphasizing keeping a strong mental state in high-pressure games such as these.
LT came out of the break desiring a quick response and drew important saves from second-half goalkeeper Ethan Turner who made an incredibly key save later into the half. Despite LT’s rampant pressure, the Devil’s held firm and a second goal came in the seventy-third minute when Ian Becker bent in a low freekick that blindsided the LT goalkeeper. And then just two minutes later, Ashton Wilson delivered a dangerous cross around the back of the LT defense for Aidan White to readjust and clip into the bottom right corner.
The boys capped off the night with a celebration, in the end, with a strong away crowd that traveled out for the game on such a cold night!
A fantastic game for the Devils who beat a local rival, and for the final opportunity for the senior players who will graduate next year. The Devils qualify for the Sectional Final to be played Friday (November 1, 2019) at 6:00 PM against (J. Sterling) Morton High School to be played at LT’s Bennet Stadium.
Goals: Gambla (27’), Becker (73’), White (75’)
