Red Devils Open Season With Win

Hinsdale Central 2 Oswego East 1

MATCH REPORT: Martin Scores Late Winner as Red Devils down Oswego East in Season Opener by Zamaan Qureshi

OSWEGO, Il. (August 21, 2018) - Hinsdale Central’s new-look varsity team took to the field in the season opener against Oswego East. Goals from Aidan White and Ronan Martin canceled out Oswego’s effort from Ford Frazer. The Red Devils went behind early in the second-half, courtesy of Frazer, Oswego’s number seven, who opened his account for the season on Tuesday night. “Falling behind is never ideal,” Coach Michael Wiggins stated, post-match, “but the value we gained in experience with a come-from-behind win, is huge.” Aidan White struck in the fifty-first minute, leveling the score, on his varsity debut. But it was second-half substitute, Ronan Martin - also a varsity debutant, who put away the winner with a strike from twenty-two-yards out, just five minutes from the final whistle. Character was obviously displayed by Wiggins' side who scrapped back for the victory against a very solid Oswego East side. Wiggins had high praise for Oswego’s attacking threat, citing their “organization” and “attacking energy”. The Red Devils claim a solid three points on the road.

The match represents the new-look Red Devils team, with a number of juniors breaking through into the varsity side. There’s definitely a lot of potential and interest into this team. Wiggins stated post-match, “we have a team that works well together. I like the overall feel of this team. They are hard-working, determined, and have taken our information and preparation well.” Wiggins stuck to his senior men, though, with seven of his veterans starting in all areas of the pitch. The squad depth that Wiggins has on his hands will certainly give him a good selection headache with close competition for a number of starting places in the coming fixtures.

Wiggins and the varsity team head to Metea Valley on Thursday (KO: 5:00 PM), with a quick turnaround from their success at Oswego East. That’s followed by the sides home-opener of the season, a local derby, against rivals Hinsdale South (KO: 4:30 PM).
